Someone contacted me through my school email address soliciting his services as a internship coach. After googling this guy's name I found that he recently worked for a non-profit organization that helps students find internships for free - I applied to this program a couple of months ago and assume this is how he obtained my email address.
Is soliciting your own business services through an email list obtained at your previous job legal?
Technically it's against the CANSPAM act, as you did not register to receive his information, and you didn't double opt-in.
So without knowing the details, I'd say no, it's not legal.
Reply: If you're sure the non profit you applied to is legitimate you could always call or write them and tell them this guy is using their list to solicit his own services. If you didn't agree to be solicited by this guy you should report him as a spammer and block his email. If he's still working for this NPO and they find out he's spamming people he will be gone in a flash. Also you should check these people out and make sure they're legit. Something doesn't sound right about the whole thing.
There are a lot of con artists out there that prey on students. Be careful.

Im a counsellor who is looking at using email to open up new areas of service to to others what do you think?
You'd have to build up a reputation, I would think. As another answerer said, no one can really know who you are or what your credentials are. However - advice is advice. If you give good advice, people will ask you for more.
I mean, look at Ann Landers. Thousands of people asked for her advice through the mail. In the beginning, no one knew who she was or what her abilities were. She made a successful career out of it.
It also depends on what other new areas of service you're looking to open up to people - and if you're looking to profit off of it or just help people. But you never know until you try, right?
